THE NATION MOURNS THE LOSS OF FAMED JOURNALIST GEORGE E. CURRY

A POWERFUL VOICE IN THE BLACK PRESS IS SILENCED

George E. Curry 1947-2016

(Washington, D.C.)--Walton and Associates mourns the death of famed columnist George Curry. Curry, who died Saturday of an apparent heart attack will be laid to rest in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Civil Rights leader and activist Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to deliver the eulogy at The Weeping Mary Baptist Church Saturday, August 27, 2016. For decades, Curry was one of the most powerful voices on issues confronting black Americans.
Last year, Walton and Associates CEO, Varion Walton had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Curry briefly during the 50th Anniversary of the March from Selma to Montgomery. For years, Curry had one of the most successful columns in more than 200 newspapers across the country.

According to The National Association of Black Journalists, at the time of his death, George Curry was in the process of revitalizing Emerge Magazine.

He was still fighting to revive that magazine until his last moment on earth," said TV- ONE host Roland S. Martin, a friend, colleague, and fellow columnist. "George Curry died with his boots on, still fighting."

In 2003, Curry was named the NABJ Journalist of the Year for his continued commitment of influencing the NEXT generation of digital journalists.

George E. Curry was 69 years old.

TOP TECH TRENDS FOR JOURNALISTS

(Philadelphia, PA.)  -NABJ CONVENTION--Talk about 21st Century Reporting!
Look who's getting"smart" about their "smart phones!" Ready or not, more backpack journalists are getting the job done  without all of that antiquated, big, bulky gear.

Check it out, that's a tiny lavaliere microphone with an actual windscreen.  Also, the tripod fits the I-PHONE  "like a glove" with the help of a special brace you can find at any local camera shop.  The microphone will only set you back about $20-dollars.

In 2011 news is immediate and breaking news is essential!  This workshop is designed to give journalists an overview of the technology and applications that allow journalists to share video content with their mobile devices.  We're talking live streaming, breaking news situations for independent journalists who are busy dominating social media sights and their blogs.

This new style of "smart reporting" with multimedia will help us to go to "video and beyond!"  Big thank you goes out to Serbino Sandifer Walker, Professor, Texas Southern University and Multimedia Director, KTSU.  Also Malik Singleton, Independent Journalist and Amani Channel, Senior Producer, KEF Media Associates.

"NABJ 2011"-The City of Brotherly Love

(Philadelphia, PA.) August 2nd--It's official, National Association of Black Journalist Convention 2011 is officially underway!  It's been really cool running into some of my former colleagues in the industry.  When I boarded the plane to Atlanta, there were several people sporting their shirts from previous NABJ conventions.  The coolest "blast from the past" was when I boarded the plane from Atlanta to Philly and I heard someone call my name.  Rod Carter, Morning Anchor for WFLA in Tampa and I worked at competing stations in Birmingham, Alabama many years ago.  If fact, he and I didn't realize it's been 10 years since we've since each other.  It's those kind of reunions I'm looking forward to this week.  I'm also looking forward to 75 workshops and seminars including "Blogging and Beyond".

Of course, CNN's Roland Martin is already here and making everyone feel welcome as the unofficial "Ambassador" of the Convention. Plus, it will be cool to see Michael Baisden and George Willborn again.  Here's to a great convention and great reunions!

Keep it here for the latest with this year's convention, celebrity sightings and possibly any signs of Will Smith making it back home!!!  To The City of Brotherly Love!!!!
