NEW: REPORTER FIRED FOR REVEALING TOO MUCH

CONFESSIONS FROM A VETERAN JOURNALIST AND COACH

(Huntsville, Alabama)--If I have said it once, I have said it a million times, "Everything that comes up doesn't have to come out!" (Out of your mouth that is). That sobering reminder echoed in my ear as I woke up to the national headlines Tuesday morning.  Let’s just say,  I was more than a little surprised when one the more controversial headlines was breaking in my own backyard.

Huntsville’s own, Shea Allen, an investigative reporter who worked at WAAY-TV  (ABC Affiliate) for nearly two years was terminated last week for publicly revealing too much about herself.  She was reportedly fired after her general manager viewed her blog entitled: "Confessions of A Red-Headed Reporter."  (SEE THE TODAY SHOW PROFILE/REPORT AT THE END OF THIS REPORT).

Shea had her blog confession; now here’s mine.

NEW ENTRY:

This week, “confessions" of an older, wiser, brunette-reporter who has learned a thing or two about how your activities are monitored, both on and off camera.

FILE PHOTO-WAAY-TV

First confession: Total transparency!  Many of the rookie reporters I coach everyday believe I coined the phrase "Everything that comes up, doesn't have to come out!" But honestly, I did not. All the credit for that goes to another seasoned, award winning journalist, Valorie Carter.  I fondly remember Valorie reciting that phrase as apart of her daily morning devotion. The only difference is when Valorie said it she was pointing to her temple and then her lips.

Quite honestly it became the "tag line" to both of our lives as Valorie and I were still finding our way during our rookie years in a Birmingham, Alabama television newsroom nearly ten years ago.

I missed the days when television newsrooms were filled with trusted, Emmy-award winning veteran anchors and reporters who looked out for younger reporters; and would help to instill in them credibility, integrity and ethics.

Unfortunately for Shea Allen and many other 21st century multi-media journalists, the newsroom environment I worked in doesn’t exist anymore.

After coaching rookie reporters for the past few years, I’ve come to realize many of them are entering the newsroom without filters. Sadly, they don’t know what to keep to themselves.

I am constantly reminding my clients through my company about compromising photos or "excessive profanity" on Facebook, Instagram and other social media outlets.

Experience has taught me that not only is a journalism degree necessary to succeed in the business; having a mentor and or coach is necessary in order to survive in this competitive industry. That’s exactly why I created Walton and Associates.

Everyday I coach the next generation of news makers on the “art of journalism.”  This situation is exactly why I’ve chosen to become an advocate for my clients who are constantly schooled about a certain decorum that is expected as long as they have a television station's call letters behind their name! Bottom line when you are hired your integrity becomes the station's integrity and more importantly--their credibility!

Second confession: I have never met Shea Allen.  In fact, I’ve only watched her reports from a distance whenever I am on assignment in Huntsville.  It is a shame because I am one of many in the industry who thought Shea was more than just another pretty face.

Third confession:  Call me old school, but no matter what generation you fall in, the fact of matter is we all have made mistakes! Television news is based on “human interaction”.  It is a sobering reminder of what we are called to do and to never lose focus.

I truly believe Shea Allen has all the makings of a good investigative reporter. Honestly, I often thought, given time she could find herself in a TOP 10 market or perhaps the network.  I'm sure however, she never dreamed in a million years she would finally make it THE TODAY SHOW but, for all the wrong reasons.

Chalk it up as a teachable moment Shea. As you go forward remember this.  It's something that this sustained me for nearly two decades; "You don't have to share with the world your every thought," that includes your religious and political views.

Do it with me now,  (pointing to your temple and then your lips) "everything that comes up -doesn't have to come out!" Again, my friend and colleague Valorie would be so proud to learn that she is also "influencing the next generation!"

Hang in there Shea; “this too shall pass!”  I only wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors.

VARION'S VIEW: MICHELDA JOHNSON: "FROM HOMELESS TO ENTREPRENEUR"

"FIERCELY FEMININE"

(Huntsville, AL.)--Whew, what an amazing testimony!  So often professional women are called on to "spread the wealth," speak before groups and our youth to give them some insight on how to succeed in life.  I thought I had heard all the success stories before, but nothing could have quite prepared me for this.  Before you hit play on the video above, first I've got to give you "the story behind the story!"

The first time I laid eyes on Michelda Johnson was two years ago at an ART N SOUL event in Huntsville, AL. Ms. Johnson is the proud owner of Edible Arrangements in Huntsville.  She has bragging rights of owning one of the very first franchise stores in the state of Alabama.  Even then, during the poetry/spoken word event I could tell there was something very giving about Michelda's spirit.  Art N Soul is an Alabama based group of authors, writers and poets, who share a common bond for the literary world.  Art N Soul is considered a "power house" organization when it comes to promoting and marketing independent artists in the Southeast.  For years Ms. Johnson has served as a corporate sponsor for a number of events for this group.  This particular night she appeared to be exhausted, but I was struck by her commitment to not only support the group by writing a check, but by 'being present and connected.'

Michelda is petite for her size.  She stands roughly 5 feet 4 inches tall, but casts a big shadow "socially and professionally." Johnson who has a background in nursing literally wears a "Wonder Woman cape!" Each day she swoops down and works 20 hours a day on everything from running two thriving businesses, raising two daughters and continuously sowing into her community.

Every now and then folks in "the Heart of the Valley" will watch her muster up enough energy to
run a marathon and play 18 holes of golf, (sometimes all in one day).  She is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who has helped raise money and awareness for everything from breast cancer to domestic violence.

My a personal introduction with Michelda Johnson came in the form one of the busiest seasons in retail, Valentine's Day!  Let's just say I had the eye-opening, one of a kind experience while watching this aggressive, no-nonsense lady who has adopted the mantra of "ain't nobody got time fah dat"embrace the pop culture of Internet sensation "Sweet Brown" as a real tag line to her own life.

February 14th, I watched Michelda somehow miraculously find the time to coordinate a schedule of more than 50 temporary/seasonal employees that included more than a dozen drivers. Together, they successfully arranged, covered, dipped, skewed and delivered, dipped more than 100 pounds of strawberries, pineapples, cantaloupes and apples to more than 2,500 customers like it was no big deal.

Last Sunday Michelda was asked to deliver an inspirational message to the youth of Pleasant Grove CPCA Church where John W. Jude and Pamela Jude are the Pastor and First Lady.  My dear friend and colleague Jannifer Matthews shared this video link with me.   I must confess, Jannifer's email came on a day that was more than challenging.

This incredible video link came at a time when I was fully doubting myself.  Over and over, month after month I have found myself questioning who I am as I continue to pursue my dream of having my own multi-media empire.  The day this video was sent to me I woke up asking 'who are you to try and do this outside of a traditional newsroom and without call letters at the back of your name?'

Michelda's video message (fire-filled sermon) came at a time when I was truly low and seeking a word, a "Rhema word" from God.  I needed a confirmation to "stay the course," to not throw in the towel because that day, my savings and my patience were truly being tested.  Nothing prepared me for how God would answer that prayer.

Before you press play: "first a warning." If you are like me and you think you know Michelda Johnson the businesswoman, brace yourself.  You have seen the "glory," but you truly don't know "her story!"  Michelda's raw, uncut, unashamed demeanor and testimony of God's goodness and "favor" in this video took me aback!  This young, aspiring, minority business owner who has been praised as one of "Huntsville's Most Influential" by the Junior League and every other professional, business organization in North Alabama wasn't concerned about etiquette, decorum or being "prim and proper!"

Michelda delivered her message to the children of Pleasant Grove in a genuine and authentic way that can only be summed up as "real talk!"  Let's just say I decided to check my email in the middle of lunch at Atlanta Bread Company in Huntsville and it wasn't pretty.  I found myself crying, slinging snot and becoming "unglued" by her very words that pierce my spirit and encouraged me all at the same time.  Folks, I'm telling you the "TV lady was getting happy down the bread isle today!"

To literally go from a "six-figure salary" to looking for pennies in Wal-Mart's parking lot? Really?  Wow, what a testimony Michelda!   I never knew and I would have NEVER guessed in a million years that you literally went from "homeless to becoming a successful entrepreneur with businesses that are blessed and truly "highly favored!"

Your message to the children empowered them, but it tore me up! It was life-altering lady.  It came at a time when I was truly low and needed to hear from God.  You truly confirmed for me what I've always suspected--that you truly are "fiercely feminine" and you make me proud to spell my name:
"w-o-m-a-n!"

Jannifer thank you for such a special gift that not lifted my spirits, but reminded me of "who" and "whose" I truly am!  God Bless!

ALL NEW: BIG MUSIC NEWS THIS WEEK

CHRISTMAS IN MARCH

NEW CLASSICS ON HAMILTON'S FORTHCOMING CHRISTMAS LP

VISION/VOICE/VARION EXCLUSIVE!

(Huntsville, AL.)  It's only March, but Grammy Award winning R&B Recording Artist Anthony Hamilton is already in the holiday spirit!  The "Pray For Me" singer returned to North Alabama recently to once again tap into the magic he makes with his writing partner and producer Kelvin Wooten of North Alabama.

In a "VISION/VOICE/VARION" EXCLUSIVE,  we discovered Anthony Hamilton set aside a week out of his extensive 2013 Tour schedule to record his new Christmas CD.  Wooten who lives in Athens, a small bedroom community just outside the City of Huntsville has worked with Hamilton before on several hits, including "So In Love," a duet Hamilton recorded with singer Jill Scott.

It is the first time the "dynamic duo" has teamed up since gaining an Oscar nod for their collaboration on the single "Freedom," a duet Hamilton recorded with newcomer Elayna Boynton on the soundtrack of the movie "Django Unchained."

Anthony Hamilton on "The Adult Mix" WHRP- 94.1 Huntsville"
Hamilton has gone on record before, proclaiming 'Huntsville as one of his favorite places to record.'  During his visit he sent out several personal tweets, including one where he affectionately dubbed Wooten as his "musical soul mate." Anthony Hamilton even took time out of recording in Huntsville this week to do a few press junkets with Kelvin Wooten,  their first in Huntsville since the two attended the Hollywood premiere of the "Django" movie in Los Angeles last December.

I personally was psyched the whole day because I was one of only a handful of members of the local media given an opportunity to hear Anthony Hamilton's impromptu version of "Away in a Manager!" The soulful blend of the R&B crooner's rich, soulful vocals, coupled with Wooten's "groovy base line," not to mention some absolutely amazing rifts from a guest lead guitarist, immediately reminded me of another legendary Christmas crooner Nat King Cole.

Hamilton and Wooten's version of  "Away in a Manager" is so unique and strong, I have no doubt this version is going to catault the award-wining musical team into being remembered for giving us another unforgettable Christmas "classic" for the ages.   Just remember, you heard HERE first!

ALABAMA ARTIST TURNING HEADS IN THE U.K

"TOWNSEND'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN"

Mutual Love Affair, Available on CD Baby & I-Tunes May 2013

His laid back vocals and smooth, jazzy baselines have turned heads before.  Now,  after more than a decade Terry Townsend is back and in a really big way.  His new album "Mutual Love Affair" is co-produced by "Django Unchained" music producer Kelvin Wooten.  The duo is teaming up again and getting a lot of attention for the title track.  The single "Mutual Love Affair" is a duet featuring Alexandria Thomas and it's already getting a lot of attention for it's rich, flawless, "out of the box" blend of contemporary gospel and jazz.

Wooten, who co-produced Grammy Award winning artist Anthony Hamilton's single "Freedom" featured in the movie "Django Unchained" calls Mutual Love Affair, "some of my best work with Townsend thus far!" The whole project is so contemporary it could really go either way, gospel or R&B, said Wooten.  "Honestly,  almost all of the tracks could be played on any top 40 station," declared Wooten.

Townsend says his 'love affair' with gospel is and has always been a "labor of love." The North Alabama based singer and songwriter tells VISION/VOICE/VARION,  "I learned a lot from my first project and I really wanted to take the time out to really listen to God and ask for his direction on moving forward with my second album."   I asked God to surround me with the right people for my next project, people with like minds.  "I'm happy to say he answered my prayers," Townsend said.

Check Out Varion's Initial "Meet & Greet" with Terry Townsend in Huntsville

Ten years ago Townsend's debut CD "The Blessed Project" earned him critical acclaim in both inspirational and gospel genres.  "The Blessed Project" also earned him critical praise from music critics all over Europe, including the UK.  Cross Rhythms Magazine based in London wrote an article praising Townsend for his "unique, out of the box approach" to inspirational gospel.  Mike Rimmer, a featured entertainment reporter with Cross Rhythms wrote: The Blessed Project "contains the right blend of soulful singles, laced with enough musical spice that are sure to send shivers down your spine."  He called it "easy listening" and encouraged music lovers all over the UK to support the Alabama based artist.

A decade later,  Townsend is posed to bask in the afterglow again. Vision/Voice/Varion has learned before his May 2013 release, his title track "Mutual Love Affair" is already in heavy rotation with some jazz and gospel stations in the Huntsville area.

Keep it here for details on the forthcoming CD "MUTUAL LOVE AFFAIR," exclusively on CD BABY and ITUNES.

HOPSCOTCH, "THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT!"

(HUNTSVILLE, AL.)  Look at what I discovered today. To all you parents screaming for your kids to get out the house , check this out. A game of Hopscotch played with a 21st century style! This is certainly not your father's "rock of ages". These college kids were having the time of their lives playing one of my favorite childhood games. They had the chalk, the side walk and the desire to play, but when I took a second look, much to my surprise they were using a smart phone to play this age old childhood game. That's right, hopscotch, there's an app for that!
It would appear the "smart phone" now takes the place of a rock or stick to mark the spot for players to hop. The guy calling the game actually rolled the dice on his smartphone. The players were all too happy to oblige. He hit a couple of "snake eyes," but it didn't deter these competitive players who are mastering this age old tradition with a modern day twist. It is good to know somethings never change.
